We Love Ice Cream! But is Ice Cream Okay for Cats?

September 22nd is National Ice Cream Cone Day.

The big debate on ice cream cone day is obvious – traditional cake cone or sugar cone?  Which one do you prefer?  Our cats seem to prefer cake cones, but personally I’m a sugar cone person.  That waffle cone our friend in the photo below is enjoying looks really good!

cat licking ice creamI don’t know about your cats, but some of mine will fight you for a lick of your ice cream!  This little guy enjoying a lick of vanilla isn’t mine, but I loved the photo.  The look of pure joy on his face is priceless.   We once had a cat who would go absolutely crazy for the green mint chocolate chip ice cream bowl after you were done.  We always made sure that it was mostly just the ice cream, since chocolate isn’t good for kitties.  But of all flavors, mint chocolate chip?  Who knows.

cats eating ice cream coneIs it okay to let your cat eat a little ice cream?  I always thought is was okay, as long as it wasn’t a lot, and it wasn’t chocolate.  But when I was writing this, I thought I’d look it up just to see.  The consensus seems to be that ice cream is okay in small amounts.  But be aware that many cats don’t tolerate dairy products well, and eating too much dairy of any kind might give them diarrhea.  So please be careful if sharing your ice cream with kitty! 1. I used to have a cat who LOVED licking the Swiss Miss Tapioca pudding container once we finished (we only let him have a teeny tiny bit because as you said, many cats can’t tolerate dairy)
I don’t think a lick of vanilla ice cream would hurt every now and then….but I would NEVER give a low fat or no fat kind of ice cream because they probably contain artificial sweeteners which can be poisonous to cats and dogs.
